Progressive Overload

Progressive overload is the gradual increase of training demand over time so the body keeps receiving stimuli that drive muscle growth.

Why it matters

Progressive overload is a programming principle: training demand needs to remain appropriate as capacity improves. It does not mean every session must become heavier or larger.

Progress can appear through load, repetitions, productive set volume, movement quality or other trackable performance markers. The useful marker depends on the goal and exercise.

Progress is not linear. Weeks at the same load, easier phases and deloads can all fit within long-term progression.

Common misconception: progressive overload does not automatically mean adding weight every session. The goal is an appropriate, trackable stimulus across time.
