NEAT (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis)

NEAT covers the energy expended for every movement outside planned exercise — walking, standing, gesturing, everyday activity.

Why it matters

NEAT can make up a large and highly variable share of daily energy expenditure. It can change with energy intake and daily life, which makes activity and step trends useful planning context.

Practical levers include walking, standing and other everyday movement. Small changes can add up across many hours and days.

During dieting, spontaneous activity can decrease in some people. It is not automatically the main reason when expected weight change does not occur.

A step target can make everyday movement more visible. It is neither a precise expenditure measurement nor a replacement for considering diet, training and recovery together.
