Energy Balance

Energy balance is the difference between calories consumed (nutrition) and calories expended (basal rate, movement, digestion).

Why it matters

Long-term changes in stored body energy depend on energy intake and expenditure. How a given deficit or surplus affects bodyweight and body composition is nevertheless dynamic and individual.

Fixed deltas such as 300 or 500 kcal can be planning starting points, but they do not define a universally moderate or safe range.

Bodyweight responds in the short term to water, glycogen and gut contents. Longer trends are therefore more informative than individual days.

Macronutrient distribution, training stimulus and diet quality also influence body composition and performance. Energy balance describes the energetic direction, not every physiological response.
