RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion)
RPE is a subjective scale that rates the effort of a set, typically from 1 to 10.
Why it matters
RPE is a subjective effort scale. In resistance training it is often linked to estimated repetitions in reserve, but that mapping is a practical convention rather than an exact measurement.
RPE can help account for day-to-day readiness when fixed percentages of 1RM do not reflect current performance well.
Like RIR, RPE is an estimate. Experience with the same exercise can improve calibration.
RPE 10 is not a quality target for every session. Different goals and exercises call for different effort levels.
