Muscle Failure

Muscle failure is the point in a set at which no further clean repetition is possible despite maximum effort.

Why it matters

Proximity to muscular failure affects effort and training stimulus. Complete failure is not required for every set and, on average, creates additional acute fatigue.

Whether failure is useful depends on the exercise, goal, training status, technique and total workload. Isolation and complex multi-joint exercises present different trade-offs.

Systematic reviews mainly show a fatigue trade-off: failure training can produce greater acute fatigue than stopping earlier. That does not justify a blanket injury or overtraining diagnosis.

Common misconception: only a set taken to complete failure is productive. Strength and hypertrophy can also improve with sets stopped earlier.
