Muscle Protein Synthesis
Muscle protein synthesis (MPS) is the process by which the body builds new muscle proteins — the biological basis of muscle growth.
Why it matters
Muscle protein synthesis is part of ongoing muscle-protein turnover. Resistance training and protein intake can influence it, while long-term muscle gain cannot be predicted from one short-term MPS response.
For resistance-trained adults, adequate daily protein and an effective training stimulus are central planning factors. An exact meal count is not a requirement for muscle growth.
Protein intake without training can affect muscle protein synthesis but does not replace a long-term progressive training stimulus for strength and muscle adaptations.
Common misconception: more protein produces proportionally more muscle. Average additional benefit diminishes as intake rises in research, while individual contexts vary.
