Garment Wash / Garment Dye
Garment wash or garment dye refers to processes in which the already sewn garment is washed or dyed.
Why it matters
Processing the finished garment produces a softer hand, removes residual stiffness from the fabric and stabilises the fit: the piece shrinks in a controlled way at the factory rather than later at the customer’s. A common detail on premium gym wear.
Garment dye also produces a slightly uneven color that suits vintage and heritage aesthetics.
Limits: effort and cost are higher than dyeing fabric before sewing — which is why it’s rarely found at entry price levels.
