How the calculation works

In volume-load mode the arithmetic is simple: sets × reps × load. The number is most comparable within the same exercise and similar execution.

In weekly-set mode the tool documents the entered set count. Research shows an average dose-response relationship between training volume and hypertrophy with diminishing additional returns, but not a universal 10–20-set optimum for everyone.

Rising volume load can result from more load, reps or sets and does not by itself prove better technique or muscle growth.

Weekly sets are a practical dose description. Useful volume depends on muscle group, exercise, intensity, proximity to failure, training experience and recovery among other factors.

Where this calculator ends

The calculator captures neither set quality nor range of motion, proximity to failure, exercise selection or recovery. Set count is therefore not an individual hypertrophy score.

Research supports more growth on average with more volume up to diminishing additional returns. An exact individual optimum cannot be derived from a universal set threshold.

A worked example

4 × 8 at 80 kg on one exercise

Volume load = 4 × 8 × 80 = 2,560 kg on that exercise. Add 14 weekly sets for the target muscle and you sit inside the effective hypertrophy range.

Frequently asked questions

Are 10–20 sets per muscle optimal?
Not universally. It is a common practice heuristic, while current meta-analyses better support a dose-response relationship with diminishing returns and large individual variation.
What does volume load tell me?
It documents sets × reps × load. It is most meaningful when comparing the same or very similar exercises under similar conditions.
Is more volume always better?
No. More volume can add adaptation on average, but additional benefit diminishes while fatigue rises. The individual trade-off varies.
What is a hard set?
Proximity to failure affects stimulus, but a rigid ≤3-RIR definition is not a universal boundary for a set that 'counts'.
Can the tool find my optimal volume?
No. It documents quantities and provides context; individual optimization requires progress, performance, recovery and training quality.
